Telangana University was established through Act No. 28 of 2006 to make higher education accessible to the educationally backward district of Nizamabad. It began with six courses in the PG building of Govt. Giriraj College, Dubba, and moved on 30 January 2009 to its 577-acre campus at Dichpally on NH-44. It has campuses at Dichpally, Bhiknoor and Sarangapur.
An 8-member NAAC team visited the University on 21–23 December 2015 and awarded it NAAC “B” grade with a score of 2.61. It was the first among the state's newly formed universities to receive UGC 12(B) recognition, and the first among them to launch Ph.D programmes. It is the third-largest university in Telangana, after Osmania University and Kakatiya University.
The University has about 81 regular faculty members, most holding doctorates, supported by 52 Assistant Professors(C), 8 regular non-teaching staff and around 260 outsourced non-teaching staff.

Main Campus, Dichpally: administrative building, Arts & Science, Computer Science and Engineering, Law, and Commerce and Business Management colleges, hostels, central library, health centre and guest house.
South Campus, Bhiknoor: college building, hostels, and the Chemistry, Physics and Geo-Informatics & Social Work departments.
Sarangapur Campus: University College of Education.
